Severni, Frederick Paul

Age 80, of Fridley, MN died peacefully in the presence of his family on April 20, 2025. He was born September, 14, 1944 in Hartford, CT to William and Elvira Severni. Preceded in death by parents and sister Sis Roberts. Survived by wife of 48 years Barbara; son Joseph (Bee); sisters Julie (William) Smith and Geri Fischer; brother William (Lenore) Severni; sister-in-law Mary Kodada; and Mai Syverson. Several years after WW2 Fred's family moved to Avon, CT, a small town outside of Hartford. There he learned to fish in nearby streams, play baseball, roam the woods and enjoy the 1950's lifestyle (no technology yet!). He loved sports - basketball, football and baseball, his favorite. His idol was Mickey Mantle and therefore, a lifelong Yankee fan. He played all these sports in high school and pitched the Avon Falcons baseball team to the state championship his senior year. He then graduated, four years later, from St. Michael's college in Winooski, VT. Following this, he was drafted and proudly served his country in Vietnam in the 101st Airborne Division 42nd Infantry Platoon Scout Dog and was awarded the Bronze Star Medal. He worked for The Hartford Insurance Co for over 25 years, but he'd tell you his real job was post-retirement on the loading dock at Dayton's and Herberger's department stores. He loved those jobs and all his coworkers. Fred was a master gardener who supplied the neighborhood with tomatoes, peppers and cucumbers. He enjoyed hooking walleyes and rooting for his Yankees. He was known in the neighborhood for sitting on the front porch, reading, doing puzzles, listening to a game and enjoying a cigar. He will be missed by many people.
