Julie Lee Meier was born on May 22, 1943, to Grace and Cecil Monroe in Aberdeen, South Dakota. Julie was the youngest of seven children and was often spoiled with love and affection. It was not until she was over one year old that a family friend realized Julie was deaf. Later, she was also diagnosed with retinitis pigmentosa, a degenerative eye disease. But Julie did not let her deafness or tunnel vision stop her! All through her life, she loved to travel. She traveled with her parents visiting family, and she traveled to Israel, Alaska, Hawaii, Bill Rice Ranch Deaf Camp, and numerous deaf retreats. It was easy to love Julie. Her devoted husband, Alfred, recalls how she was shy but warm, caring and so knowledgeable. And when he first met her, she was an amazing tumbler/gymnast!
Alfred and Julie first met at a deaf camp as teenagers. Many years later, they fell in love and were married on June 19, 1971. Julie continued as a Keypuncher at Norwest Bank in Minneapolis until she became a mother to Jody and later Alan. She loved staying at home cooking, cleaning, and caring for her family. But what brought her pure joy was her grandchildren. She rarely missed her precious grandchildren’s sporting events and concerts, even though she could not hear or see them. Her last church service she attended was seeing her grandson preach.
Throughout her life, Julie was an expert on Royal families and presidential history. While on a family vacation to the White House, a secret service agent who had a deaf daughter invited her family to a personal tour of the White House. He was impressed with Julie's knowledge of the Presidents and their families.
Family was very important to Julie. She loved family holidays, reunions, old family photos, family memorabilia, and researching her family’s genealogies. Throughout her life she never forgot her extended family’s birthdays or important family details. If we had a family question, Julie always knew the answer or date!
But even more importantly, Julie loved Jesus. She asked Jesus to be her Savior in 1977. She has been a faithful member of Woodcrest Baptist Church since 1978. Her husband and children could see her faithfully praying every morning. And God amazingly allowed her to see enough to faithfully read her Bible (with a lighted magnifier) until He took her Home. Now our beloved Julie is up in Heaven seeing, hearing, and singing with perfect eyes, ears, and mouth!
Julie is preceded in death by her parents, Cecil and Grace Monroe; and her siblings, Sherwood, Cecil, Robert, Jane, David, and Donald Monroe; and many other precious family members.
She is survived by her caring and adoring husband, Alfred Meier; her loving children, Jody (Brian) Schoonover and Alan Meier; her dear grandchildren, Jackson, Jefferson, and Allison Schoonover: and her preciously found daughter, Susan Ali, and grandchildren, Amani, Kelen, and Tyce Ali; as well as many wonderful in-laws, nieces, and nephews.
