Scott Alan Olmstead

Nov 17, 1954 — Sep 1, 2026

Scott “Scotty” Alan Olmstead, age 71 of Oak Grove, MN, passed away on September 1, 2026.

Scott was born at the University of Minnesota Hospital in Minneapolis to Robert James Olmstead, Jr and Marilyn Carlson Olmstead. He grew up in Fridley, Minnesota, attending Hayes Elementary, Fridley Junior and Senior High Schools. Scott made a profession of faith in Jesus Christ and was baptized at age 13. He married Ann Shirley in 1989. They designed and built their home together on the Rum River in Oak Grove, MN.

His lifelong passion for construction began during his high school years when he started framing homes. This early experience sparked an entrepreneurial spirit, leading him to establish his own highly respected company: Scott Olmstead Builders. As a custom home builder Scott took immense pride in crafting high-quality homes with integrity. He considered his word and his handshake his bond.

Beyond his professional life, Scott found his true joy on the water. He loved sharing his passion for fishing. He was an all-season fisherman all over Minnesota, Wisconsin, Florida and Canada. Favorite bodies of water included Lake Sylvia, Mille Lacs Lake and Lake of the Woods. He and Ann enjoyed winters with family and friends in Punta Gorda, Florida.

Scott touched the lives of many. He will be deeply missed and remembered for his quick humor, legendary collection of hats, t-shirts and one-liners. Scott could always make you smile. He was not only funny and entertaining; he genuinely cared about people and was incredibly generous.

Scott was preceded in death by parents, Robert and Marilyn Olmstead, grandson, Dayton Olmstead and brother-in-law, John Shirley.

  • He is survived by his wife of 37 years, Ann Olmstead of Oak Grove, MN; daughter, Tovi Nelson (Brett) of Ham Lake, MN; grandsons, Tav Olmstead of Minneapolis, MN; and Coy Nelson of Ham Lake, MN; brother, Bruce (Susan) Olmstead of Fayetteville, GA; sister, Sue (Tom) Peterson of Arden Hills, MN; brother, Paul (Sharon) Olmstead of Puyallup, WA; sister-in-law Nancy (Mike) Ballard of Coon Rapids, MN; sister-in-law Mary (Paul) Fedje of Wyoming, MN; sister-in-law Deb Shirley of Circle Pines; brother-in-law James Shirley of Circle Pines; and many nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.
